Paul has specialized for 30+ years in advising and implementing creative life insurance solutions for many of Canada’s most prominent business families. He works closely with the family members, their internal family office teams as well as their external legal and accounting advisors. This specialized work provides him a unique perspective on business family succession and estate liquidity matters that few others can offer.
Paul and his team are recognized by accounting and legal firms across Canada as experts in the use of life insurance in trust and estate planning. He is a former chair of the Conference for Advanced Life Underwriters (CALU), a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and graduate of the Family Enterprise Advisor Program.
Paul is a former member of the Board of Governors of Crescent School, an independent school for boys, chaired their successful $35 million capital campaign and former co-chair of the $60 million campaign for Pathways to Education, a national organization that helps at-risk youth graduate from high school.
He enjoys skiing, golf and spending time with his 4 grown children.
Alex Lucas

Alex is a senior financial services executive with more than 25 years of leadership experience across insurance, banking, and wealth management. Before joining Tompkins Insurance, Alex served as President and CEO of Manulife Bank of Canada, where he led an organization of ~$30 billion in assets and over 500 employees. Over the course of his career, he has built a reputation for steady leadership, thoughtful decision-making, and a strong commitment to developing people and culture alongside financial performance. He previously held several senior leadership roles at Manulife Canada and began his career with BMO Financial Group.
During his tenure at Manulife Bank of Canada, Alex led a return to market share growth in deposits and mortgages. He strengthened employee engagement to record levels and refocused the organization on independent advice channels. As General Manager of Individual Insurance at Manulife Canada, he led a $500 million business and significantly improved its competitive position, bringing sales performance up from approximately half of the market leader to number one position through the re-launch of participating whole life insurance products. He also guided major product updates, expanded digital capabilities, and introduced advanced underwriting tools, helping modernize the business while maintaining strong financial discipline. Earlier in his career, he led national financial planning organizations and spent extensive time managing product lines across insurance, wealth, and banking.
Alex holds an MBA from Dalhousie University and an Honours Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Guelph. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder and completed the Directors Education Program (ICD.D) at the Rotman School of Business. In addition to his executive leadership, he has supported community organizations including the Credit Counselling Society of Canada. Outside of work, Alex is a proud father of two teenagers, a downhill skier, an avid NBA and NFL fan, and enjoys travelling regularly for sport or leisure.
Allen Baker

Allen is a trusted advisor to some of Canada’s most preeminent private companies, their families and external advisors. Prior to joining Tompkins in 2022, Allen was a Partner at PwC where he built long-lasting relationships and strong partnerships. Allen’s active involvement and understanding of each client’s unique situation enable him and the team to deliver tailored, value-added solutions.
Allen currently sits on the Board of the NHL Foundation – Canada and was recently a Member of the Southlake Hospital Philanthropy Cabinet.
Joshua Garnett

Vice President, Client Insurance Solutions
Joshua’s primary focus is on the product design and illustrative process of our strategies. Joshua’s expertise in financial modeling helps ensure an optimal client experience throughout the development of customized insurance-based solutions. Prior to joining Tompkins Insurance Services in 2017, Josh spent over 6 years at Sun Life working in the design and pricing of insurance products and leading their advanced solutions team to develop insurance-based concepts and strategies.
Joshua is actively pursuing membership with the Society of Actuaries and the Institute for Advanced Financial Advisors through the completion of the ASA and CLU designations.
Nicolas Tompkins

Nicolas and his team are responsible for supporting clients and their advisory teams as they apply for and manage coverage and reporting of their policies.
Since joining Tompkins Insurance in 2018, Nicolas has consistently implemented improvements to the application process and policy service offering through innovative use of technology and a forward-thinking approach that focuses on the unique needs of our clients.
Through fostering a culture of continuous improvement, Nicolas and his team seek to streamline operations to simplify the process for our clients, their teams, and the insurers. Under Nicolas’s leadership, customized solutions have been implemented to provide more personalized, comprehensive and timely reporting for Tompkins Insurance clients.
Nicolas is a Chartered Life Underwriter and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Dalhousie University.y outdoor activities in particular scuba diving.
Florence Marino

Tompkins Insurance is honoured to welcome Florence Marino, as Vice President, Tax & Estate Planning to our growing team.
Prior to joining Tompkins Insurance, Florence was the Head of Tax, Retirement & Estate Planning at Manulife. Over her 34-year career at Manulife, she developed her reputation as a nationally recognized expert on life insurance, tax and estate planning.
Florence is a past editor of the Canadian Taxation of Life Insurance and special advisor and contributor to the current, 13th edition and Editor-in-Chief of Insurance Planning, both published by Thomson Reuters. She is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners, Estate Planning Council of Toronto, and the Conference for Advanced Life Underwriting. She is on the Tax Technical Committee of STEP and the Tax Policy and Advocacy Committee of CALU. Florence is a frequent speaker and author at these and many other organizations.
In her role at Tompkins Insurance, Florence continues her active involvement in the tax and estate planning community and is a resource to professionals in the field for our valued clients.
Bryan Tatoff

Bryan Tatoff is responsible for leading the finance, information technology, administration and human resources functions at Tompkins Insurance. He has helped businesses in a variety of industries achieve growth, develop supportive management teams, and add systems and processes while maintaining an entrepreneurial and customer-focused culture. Bryan started his career at KPMG and Imperial Oil, and then went on to be EVP & CFO of Danier Leather Inc., President and CFO of Balcan Plastics Limited and CFO of International Language Academy of Canada Inc.
